  • 1 tbsp Olive Oil can substitute with vegetable or canola oil
  • 1 large Onion use yellow or white onions as alternatives
  • 2 cloves Garlic or 1/2 tsp of garlic powder
  • 500 g Lean Ground Beef substitute with ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option
  • 2 tbsp Plain Flour or 1 tbsp cornstarch mixed with cold water for gluten-free
  • 500 ml Beef Stock can use chicken broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire Sauce or soy sauce for gluten-free
  • 200 g Tomato Purée ketchup can be a quick workaround
  • 1 tbsp Dried Mixed Herbs substitute with Italian seasoning if needed
  • 200 g Frozen Peas or Sweetcorn optional
  • 200 g Mature Cheddar Cheese can swap with Gruyère
  • 200 g Mozzarella Cheese use provolone as an alternative
  • to taste Salt
  • to taste Black Pepper
To Top It Off
  • 1 tbsp Fresh Parsley optional for garnish

Method
 

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 190°C (170°C fan) and par-boil sliced potatoes in salted water for 5-7 minutes.
  2. In a skillet, heat olive oil and sauté chopped onion until soft. Add garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes.
  3. Add ground beef, breaking it apart and browning for 6-8 minutes. Drain excess fat.
  4. Sprinkle flour over, combine, and then slowly pour in stock while stirring. Add Worcestershire sauce, tomato purée, and herbs. Simmer until thickened.
  5. In a greased oven-safe dish, layer half of the potatoes, the beef mixture, and top with remaining potatoes.
  6. Mix cheddar and mozzarella cheeses and sprinkle over the casserole.
  7. Bake for 30-35 minutes until cheese is golden brown and bubbling.
  8. Let the casserole rest for 5-10 minutes before serving.
